Automatic Packaging Machines: A Guide to Choosing the Right Production Line
Once a manual packaging station becomes the bottleneck of the line, any improvement at the filling station quickly becomes futile: the products pile up before the packaging table, and the pace of the entire line is determined by the slowest manual operations in it. Automatic packaging machines solve exactly this problem, but the term covers very different equipment families: cartoners, sleeve bundlers, case packers, tray machines and master carton packaging machines. The right choice starts with understanding what each family does and which stage in the line it belongs to.
What is considered an automatic packaging machine?
An automatic packaging machine carries out the full packaging cycle without human hand contact: receiving the product from the line, erecting or forming the package, inserting the product, closing it and releasing it to the next conveyor. The important distinction is between this and a semi-automatic machine, in which part of the operations are performed manually. Both are legitimate solutions: a semi-automatic machine is suitable for limited outputs and a wide variety of products in short runs, while a full automatic packaging machine is intended for continuous production where speed and consistency are the central criteria.
It is also important to understand what happens to the team when a packaging station is automated. The workers who staffed the packaging table do not disappear from the line: they move to operating roles, packaging material feeding, quality control and machine supervision. For the workers, this is less physically exhausting work, and for the factory it is a way to leverage their knowledge of the product instead of their hands.
Which machine family is suitable for which packaging?
The simplest way to map the field is by the type of packaging that comes out at the end of the process. The table below summarizes the main families, with examples from the Impac catalog as a concrete reference for each family.
Family | What it does | Catalog example |
Cartoner (Cartoner) | Erects a cardboard box, inserts the product and closes it | MKH-3, MKH-4 |
Sleeve Bundling (Sleeve Bundling) | Bundles several units in a cardboard sleeve | MP-10, MP-50, MP-70 |
Case Packer (Case Packer) | Wrap-around packing of grouped products in cardboard | CW-01 |
Master carton packaging | Centralized shipment packaging in cardboard cartons | 68-FD |
Tray machines | Erect a cardboard tray and load products into it | TL-01, TP-01 |
Robotic loading | Picks up products and places them in the package | PK-01 Pick and Place |
In a complete line, these families are integrated with one another: a sleeve bundler creates a package of cups, a case packer packs the bundles in cardboard, and a conveying system transfers them between stations. Therefore, the right way to view the line is as one system, not as separate machines.
What really determines the speed of an automatic packaging machine?
The catalog specification of unit output is a starting point, not a final answer. The actual speed is determined by the product behavior: a delicate product requires gentler handling, an irregularly sized product requires a more forgiving feeding system, and a frozen product sets different requirements than yogurt. For example, the continuous MKH-4 cartoner reaches up to 120 cartons per minute thanks to a fully servo system on every axis, and the MP-50 bundler reaches up to 120 sleeves per minute. The engineering question is at what speed your specific product passes through the machine in a stable manner, and this is tested in characterization against real samples.
A second factor that determines the effective pace is changeover. A line that produces three packaging sizes changes machine configuration several times a week, and every minute of setup is a minute of downtime. In servo-driven machines the changeover is carried out through the control system, and in the MKH-4 the feed system can be separated in under one second, which shortens the preparation time between production runs.
Five considerations before purchasing
▪ The final packaging type and whether a change in it is expected in the coming years, for example a move from plastic to cardboard.
▪ The range of sizes and formats the machine will need to cover, and the frequency of changeovers between them.
▪ The target output in a full shift, including setup and cleaning times, and not just peak moments.
▪ Fit to the existing line: conveyor height, flow direction, and available floor space.
▪ Service and spare parts: who arrives when the line stops, and how quickly.
What happens between the machines: the conveying and synchronization that define the line
A good packaging line is measured not only by the machines themselves but by what connects them. Conveyors, accumulators and guidance systems transfer the product from station to station, and the control system synchronizes the speeds so that a short stop at one station does not immediately stop the whole line. Proper design of the gaps and buffers between stations gives the line the ability to absorb small disruptions, such as a cardboard roll change or a single product jam, without losing continuity.
In practice, this is why purchasing a packaging machine is not a standalone equipment deal but an integration decision. An excellent machine whose feed speed does not match the line before it will underperform, and a machine installed without a buffer before it will stop with every minor disruption upstream. Therefore, at the characterization stage, the entire line is examined, even when purchasing only one machine.
Another factor that is often overlooked is cleaning and routine maintenance. A packaging machine in the food industry must be cleaned frequently, so the accessibility of the work areas, the ease of disassembly and reassembly of parts in contact with the product, and the setup time at the start of the shift all affect effective output no less than the nominal rate. A machine that is hard to clean will stand idle longer, and a machine that is easy to maintain will return the investment through the operating team’s working hours as well. These considerations are examined against the machine itself, not against the data sheet.
Why plan the machine around the product, and not the other way around?
At Impac, we have been engaged in industrial design and manufacturing since the 1970s, and the principle that guides every project is that the machine is built around the product. The same cartoner must behave differently when it is packing frozen personal products and when it is packing bags of powder, so alongside the standard catalog models, the engineering team adapts the feed, gripping and closing systems to the specific product. This ensures that the customer receives a machine that has been tested against their product before it even reached the production floor.
Summary
Automatic packaging machines are not a single product but different equipment families, each solving another stage in the line. The right choice starts with defining the final package, continues with throughput data and changeover requirements, and ends with testing the machine against the real product. Contact Impac to characterize your packaging station in the line, and send product and packaging samples so the actual fit can be evaluated.
Frequently asked questions
